This itinerary is suitable only for those ready to cover a distance of over 80 kilometres. The not many difficulties are concentrated in the first section.
The itinerary is part of an ancient road, originally linking the Etruscan towns of Arezzo and Fiesole, which became a classical trade route during the Middle Ages. Along it, it is possible to admire Medieval churches, quaint hamlets, touching landscapes and, finally, the historical centre of Arezzo.
Partendo direttamente da Villa Tanini si raggiunge la Pieve di Cascia. From the pieve, a narrow road on its left leads to the bottom of the valley. From here, get on the road named “Setteponti”, because of the several bridges over the streams coming down from Pratomagno. This section of the bicycle ride can be enjoyed in full relaxation, among vineyards and olive groves, taking in several villages and hamlets, with interesting evidence of their Medieval past: the Romanesque pieve of Pian di Sco, Badia a Soffena and the “terre murate” (fortified villages) at Castelfranco di Sopra. Once in the vicinity of Loro Ciuffena, we recommend to get into the village along the picturesque road which departs from the left of the imposing bridge (via del mulino). The most fit athletes can also ride up to the remarkable pieve of Gropina, a steep kilometre from the village.
The itinerary now proceeds on the plain, with some pleasant descents, to Castiglion Fibocchi (Medieval town). At Buriano, cross the river Arno over the medieval bridge, famous because Leonardo da Vinci, in the middle of a natural park. From the bridge of Buriano (where we recommend a stop in the park, on the right before crossing the river) the road gently goes uphill again, ending up in a final straight stretch leading to Arezzo. Here, keeping an eye on your watch, pedal all the way to Piazza Grande, the main square in the historical centre and from there down along Corso Italia to finally reach the railway station. If you are tired you can contact the owner of Villa Tanini for coming back by car.
